“[Social media] literally changes your relationship with society, with each other . . . It probably interferes with productivity in weird ways. God only knows what it’s doing to our children’s brains.”

Have you ever looked up from your phone and realized you’ve just spent the past hour of your life (or more) mindlessly scrolling through social media? Do you feel out of control—and unable to stop? If so, you’re not alone. And I can help.

As the author of the book How to Break Up With Your Phone and the founder of ScreenLifeBalance.com, I have heard from thousands of people all around the world who tell me about their struggles with social media. They report feeling trapped in endless cycles of checking and posting. They tell me that they know that social media is causing them to feel anxious, insecure, out of control, and depressed—but they can’t seem to look away. Many people tell me that they’ve tried to cut back on their use of social media—sometimes multiple times—but that they always seem to end up right back where they started. They feel out of touch with reality, and unable to be present in their own lives.

And they’ve asked me for help.

A guided 10-day detox designed to revolutionize your relationship with social media—and put you back in control.

I’ve read your emails and your comments, and I know that far from being a harmless diversion, social media truly has the capacity to hurt people. That’s why I’ve called upon my experience as a science journalist, author and coach to put together a ten-day guided course designed to help you redefine the way you interact with social media and reconnect with what matters to you in life.

My goal isn’t to get you to never look at social media again (unless that’s what you want).

My goal is to help you create a new, healthy relationship with social media—one in which you use it when it’s fun or useful, and stop using it when it’s not. In other words, I want you to be in control.

I'm Catherine Price. I'm a science journalist by training, and my work has been featured in publications including The Best American Science Writing, The New York Times, The Washington Post Magazine, O Magazine, Men's Journal and Popular Science, among others.

I became interested in our relationships with technology in 2015, after having a baby and realizing that I was spending more time than I wanted to on my phone. I wrote a book called How to Break Up With Your Phone, and founded a platform I call Screen/Life Balance, which is dedicated to helping people scroll less and live more—which is exactly what we'll be doing in this course. How to Break Up With Your Phone came out in 2018 and received coverage from outlets around the world—most notably in a viral piece in the New York Times by journalist Kevin Roose, about his experience having me coach him through a 30-day phone breakup. The book is now being published in 29 countries, and I continue to be fascinated—and disturbed—by how many people write to me about how out of control they feel when it comes to social media—and how desperate they are for help. I’m thrilled to have been able to draw upon my background as a teacher and journalist to create what I believe is the first-ever online intervention course for social media. It’s research-based, evidence-backed, and designed to get results.

The Screen/Life Balance Social Media Detox course includes:

  • An online course and printable coursebook with 100 pages’ worth of materials, including:

    • Ten days’ worth of evidence-backed daily assignments, designed to help you change your habits, create better boundaries, and regain your sense of control

    • Practical, actionable steps you can take to reduce the time you spend mindlessly scrolling
